So this weekend I shot the scene exercise about the couple trying to get pregnant, which for the moment has the working title Good News/Bad News. We did that yesterday and I think it went very well. I've only skimmed the footage so far, but the actors were fantastic. I get such a charge out of hearing something I've written performed by people who can really act. We workshop things in class sometimes, but it's so not the same.
Heather and Rafael never met each other, but for the 2.5 hours that the camera was rolling it felt like they'd been married for 5 years. I'm happy with how it went. The actors both seemed happy as well. They've both asked for it for their demo reels. But really the experience just makes me even more looking forward to the directing class. How much better will I get once I've actually been taught how to do this.
I'll tell you though, shooting is tiring. We did my shoot yesterday where I was the director, and Jorge's shoot today where I was the boom operator. And now I'm kind of wiped. Though I will say Jorge was kind to me in that his actors were mostly sitting on the floor. Being the boom operator requires a certain amount of endurance at the best of time, which this was. If I'd spent 4 hours trying to hold the thing up along ceiling level I would probably be unable to lift my arms at all by now.
