Representation

Of the 250 top grossing films 83.6% had a straight white male protagonist.

This is not a long read and it's an interesting look at the numbers.

So what am I going to do about it?

Directly?

Nothing.

Because here's the thing. I might make movies about the rest of us - Passing, Killer, Ghost Tours, Enid's Wall (should I manage to make it) - but the only way to make it into the top 250 grossing films is to make Studio films. I'm not going to make studio films. I've given this a bit of thought over the last year and a half. Do I want to attempt the studio world? In a lot of ways that window of opportunity closed about 15 years ago. At least the easily stepped through french door of a window. If I really really wanted it I could probably still make it happen. But I don't want it badly enough. I think I will be much happier teaching and making indie films.
