At this point I think everyone knows, but just for the record: I have a job!!!!! I'm so glad that's resolved. The process of job hunting was very bad for my emotional and mental well being. And it's a job that I expect I will settle nicely into and enjoy. I may well never have to job hunt again. (I should probably change the name of my blog now.)
So to kick off the new year, yesterday I went on a hike with Katie and Brenda.
We went to OK Slip Falls about 25 miles northwest of Warrensburg. There was a sign in the parking lot about where the name comes from. Back in the day when the primary activity in the mountains was logging they would build a dam to create a pond and then fill it up with trees. They would build a slip - sort of like a bobsled run - to funnel the logs down to the river. They would release the dam and it would flush all the logs down the slip, but that could be dangerous so you had to make sure no one was in the way. Once the path was clear they would shout "OK, slip!" and send the logs on their way. From that we now have OK Slip pond, OK Slip stream, and OK Slip falls.
They are the highest falls in the Adirondacks at 200 feet. It's just over 3 miles to hike from Route 28 into the overlook. It was nice, but slightly longer than I'm really fit enough for. 3 miles in snowy mountain woods is not like a 3 mile jog in the neighborhood. I'm feeling it today. But it was worth it for the photos.
These are all pretty high res, they might take a little time to load. Oops.

The forest had a very black and white feel to it. |

I couldn't decide if I liked the wider shot... |
|
...or the medium shot better. So I give you both. |

There were lots of signs of life sticking up through the snow. The snow wasn't very deep anyway. |
|
OK Slip Falls, wide shot. I think we all expected to be a little closer, but it wasn't a bad view. |

OK Slip Falls, medium shot. |

OK Slip Falls close up. If I had a tripod I'd have gotten a long exposure wispy water kind of shot, but at 6+ miles there was no way I wanted one more thing to carry. |
What a beautiful place! I wonder how it looks in the fall or summer. Did you have snowshoes? I like the wider trail shot better.
ReplyDeleteI imagine K&B will do it again in those seasons if you want to tag along. Or just look at K8's photos after.
DeleteWe did have snowshoes, but I only used them on the way back. They weren't really necessary, I just wanted to try them out. The end of that experiment was that I went to LLBean and updated my cross country ski stuff.
