Questions from a skype interview

He started out introducing everyone and saying we had 15-20 minutes, but in fact we spent almost a half an hour.

  • Tell us more about why the assistant professor of communication arts position interests you.
  • Can you elaborate on your teaching philosophy and provide an example of when you feel like you've succeeded with students?
  • If you were to be hired here what would be your expectations of, and goals for our students, both inside and outside of the classroom.
    • That's a new one. So I said my goal is for them to become successful media creators but to reach that goal my expectation is that they meet me half way. They need to be a little bit hungry for it and willing to work hard. My classes aren't easy, but they're fun.
    • Then they said, feel free to elaborate on that. I told them about the students today who hung around after class to talk about their demo reels with me.
  • You know from the ad that you'll be teaching the following courses (he lists 5 of them). Could you tell us your comfort level with teaching these courses, and are there other courses you could envisage yourself teaching.
  • Following up on the answer of I'd love to develop a cinematography class for you, how would you make a class like that work in a classroom setting?
  • This is a fairly isolated region, given your teaching load and the location how do you intend to keep yourself current and relevant in your field?
  • Then it was what questions do you have for us. We were only about 11 minutes into it and he said we had 5-10 more minutes, but then he gave me 15. I was fishing after a while. My questions were:
    • What is it that your students want. A year or 5 years out what jobs are they getting, what are we preparing them for?
    • Your faculty is predominantly PhD and I'm an MFA so I'm curious if there is a history of tenure for MFA faculty.
    • (Those were the two I'd prepared and then they asked for more.)
    • Are the students films getting to festivals, do they want them to be, should that be a goal that I strive with them toward?
    • Is there a lot of collaboration among the faculty?

And then thanks and "I'll be in touch" in an absolutely unspecified amount of time. I figure that'll either be in the next 2 weeks or else at the end of January.
