So far on my Academic Job Hunt spreadsheet (yes it's color coded and organized by due date), there are 15 jobs. By the end of the season I might get up to 20. I don't know if we've peaked yet. I'm too new to the process.
Of those I have submitted 6 applications so far and have been working diligently on the rest. Tweaking the cover letters, writing my statement of teaching philosophy and my statement of creative goals, arranging for letters of recommendation. (Nina's made me blush.)
Last night I got my first invitation to a 30 minute Skype first interview. They used to do phone interviews for the first time around. These days it's Skype. I need to find a good shirt and a nice pair of earrings. But I'll do better when I can see people anyway.
The school is Cal State San Bernardino. They started reviewing applications on 10/1 and contacted me on 10/8. That seems quick, and like a good sign; it didn't take long for them to decide to short list me. First interviews by 10/15. The remaining 9 schools don't even have deadlines by 10/15. It's very exciting. Slightly nerve wracking. Mostly I'm giddy.
Part of the 30 minutes is a 5 minute lesson. No visual aids, no props, no walking around. I think I've picked my topic. I'm assuming they'll let me put it in context. Here's a 5 minute lecture that would come at this point in a larger lesson about audio filters and effects in post production. Anyone who has Skype or FaceTime and is willing to let me practice for 5 minutes over the weekend it would be much appreciated. In fact, if anyone wants to do a 30 minute practice interview that would be cool. Come up with your own questions, or I'll toss you a few that seem likely and I ought to be practicing.
Woo Hoo!!!
