Which is to say, go back far enough and my posts are about being a film student. And now I'm a film teacher.

Another screening for Killer
I just found out that Killer is going to be screening at the DC Independent Film Festival the weekend of February 19th. Southwest flights that weekend are $59 each way so I'll definitely be going. If I can get a good group of people to attend - which is possible as most of my friends live in the area - I'm likely to see people that I haven't seen in more than a year and a half. I think that's going to feel very strange. In a good way, it'll be great to see everyone. It just really doesn't feel like I've been gone that long.

Lessons Learned
With my client last week we interviewed kids who had done oral histories as part of a class in the local community college. This is what one of them said he learned:

Trying to keep my energy up
I knew this was going to be a difficult week, and it is. I had a long day of shooting on Sunday, a long night of shooting Monday. Then up early for meetings Tuesday morning and then class Tuesday night. Up early for class on Wednesday and all the stress that day entailed when my actress sent me an email at 9am saying she had a fever and wouldn't be able to make it. Though in the end Wednesday went very well. I found a last minute replacement actress who did a fine job, our group presentation in Thesis Prep and the discussion that ensued was really interesting. The shoot for Cinematography went well enough that I got an email from John the next morning saying good job. And there was a potential incoming grad student who was sitting in on that class who I sat and talked with for a while after. She was nice, I hope she comes next year.

Am I old or am I experienced?
You know we have been watching films this week. Yesterday was Frankenstein and I was a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (both 1931 and pre-code). Tomorrow we're watching Angels with Dirty Faces (1938, so post-code) and then talking about all three. They were interesting/entertaining enough. It was a little difficult to watch Frankenstein mostly because I've recently seen the National Theater Live broadcasted stage version of Frankenstein which was based on the original source material and not on the movie and so wildly different. And so I watched the whole thing constantly comparing the two. But if you think about the three eras - when the book was written, when the film was made, and when the stage play was made - it is an interesting comparison. You learn a lot about people by what they find horrific. Mostly though I'm falling farther and farther behind in my reading for that class because it's just not as interesting to me as trying to prep for tomorrow's shoot, or trying to work my head around new story ideas for screenwriting.

Bit different from my day
I wonder how much of a refrain "That's now how we did it the last time I was in school" is going to become. I'll try not to bore you with it.
