And now it's July. I'm leaving today to give others a chance to enjoy the Cape. I'll be gone for the first half of the month, and shooting a film in the second in half of the month so this ends my time of savoring.
Friday (3rd) - Emily and Justin were visiting so I allowed myself "cape" food. A cup of chowder at dinner, and a kiddy sized ice cream at the Sundae School. (The ice cream really satisfied a craving for the evening and then made me crave it even harder over the weekend.
Monday (6th) - I paddled the other half of the Herring River. There was a family of swans (Mom, Dad and a half a dozen little ones.) Very cute, but I didn't get too close. Didn't want to stress them, and besides, they get mean on good days, imagine protecting the little ones? Seriously though, this river is possibly what I'll miss the most. Well, and all the conservation lands surrounding it.
I haven't been good about writing down the littler things. Like sitting and listening to the rain fall. Or walking in the conservation lands with Louis. I've been doing a lot of that.
Wednesday (15) - this week it's been night photos. Here's one if you missed the full post of photos.
Saturday (18th) - it was my last dance. I realized it was exactly a year since I found the Cape contra dances. I know because that first weekend I danced here I did the Chatham dance on Friday and the Sandwich dance on Saturday. At the Sandwich dance on the break there was cake and everyone sang happy birthday to Jim. He was the first person whose name I remembered as a result. So last night on the break, when Trudy brought in a cake with candles and we all started singing I got a little misty. At the end of the night when I left everyone gave me hugs. When I take my summer vacations here - because lets be honest, whether Mom and Dad keep the house or not I'll find a way to vacation here - I'll have to make a point of aiming to include the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of whichever month so that I can come back to dance.
Sunday (19th) - Took a walk in the conservation lands. It's safe to assume I'm doing that all the time actually. Louis had fun rolling in the dirt, so Monday I took him to the self serve dog wash place next to Buckies. He hated that, but I wasn't letting him on the bed again without it.
Monday (20th) - Moonrise at Fort Hill. It was full moon just at sunset and there was a bit of a crowd at the little parking area. More shots here.
Wednesday (22nd) - all the Cape things today. Linda, Nancy and Leah arrived this afternoon and we dove head first into vacation. We went to the beach and built sand castles, we grilled dinner (hot dogs and summer squash) and ate on the deck, we went to JTs for ice cream (I had moose tracks, yum), and then caught the sunset at low tide at Rock Harbor. The dog is a mess and Leah is almost tired.
Thursday (23rd) - We had a very kid day. We took the dog and all went for a walk in the conservation lands, at the end of which Leah fell asleep in her stroller. So we sat on the deck for a bit talking and catching up. Then after lunch we did trampolines, go carts, moon bounce, and the playground in Dennis. We came home to throw burgers on the grill for dinner and then went to the School House for ice cream. It was like the perfect kid day.
Friday (24th) - Whales and more whales. We went up to Provincetown and did a whale watch, which is always a risky situation for me because of seasickness, but also we had a 2 year old with us. In the end it was a great trip for both of us (and Linda and Nancy too). The seas were flat and calm, the weather was perfect, and we saw 7 whales who spent an hour playing around our boat. Then we wandered around P-Town and had dinner at a place with a famous chef. Linda took a selfie with the chef who I think enjoyed the fangirling.
Saturday (25th) - Today we went to the Chatham Fish Pier to see the seals. It was quiet at first, but then a boat came in with a load of fish and that brought the seals and gulls around. We also went to the Birdwatcher's General Store, Land Ho for lunch, and after a bit of a nap we went to Cold Storage Beach for some playtime before dinner. The water was nice, I went pretty far in. Of course it's the bay side so you can walk for a while without getting very deep. We ended the night at Kate's for ice cream. I'll have to go back on the diet once they leave.
Wednesday (29) - kayaked Swan Pond. That's not a paddle I do very often, and I'm not sure why. There is a put in spot on the river right across the street from Clancy's. I wonder if it's new from when they redid the bridge there last year. I don't remember it before, but it was really easy. I got to see swans and baby swans, small snowy egrets, ducks, a cormorant, and maybe a kingfisher. I was trying to see if the houses at the end of Depot Road have water access or not. I'm going to say not as I couldn't even see them from the water.
