Today was a school in Texas. Considering I got in a major car crash two days ago due to the 8 foot high snow banks making it impossible to see, Texas sounds kind of nice. It was a half an hour phone interview. Apart from the fact that I don't have to dress for it the phone interview is not my preference. Skype interviews you can sort of make eye contact, you can see how they're reacting. And they can see you. I think phone interviews are worse for rambling answers. You have to just stop talking and trust that they will understand that was the end of your answer. If they can see you you've got that "I am done" look rather than the "I'm thinking about it" look.
I think it went well. Generally the same questions as always. There was a couple of cinematography specific questions. There was what camera packages have you worked with. I gave them the answer, but then expounded on that because I am a firm believer that it is more important to teach them Camera rather than any specific cameras. If they only thing you can teach is Sony then what will your students do when that camera is obsolete in 3 years and they get handed an Arri? If that kind of answer isn't what they were looking for then I would be a bad fit for them.
But mostly I think it went ok and now we're in the wait and see mode for them. Add it to the list really. Hoping for a campus visit though, if for no other reason then to get a couple of days out of this bitter cold.

ReplyDeleteI never did get a campus invite from them, so apparently this wasn't the answer they were looking for.
