We had auditions last night in a room right next to where my Thursday night editing class was last term. We kept the door propped open when we didn't have someone in just to make us easier to find for when they arrived. In the room were 3 people in their last semester of school: and undergrad senior, Aaron, a young grad student, and me, a not so young grad student. At one point we all looked at each other and had the realization that we all needed to be job hunting starting right now. Fortunately we're not really qualified for the same jobs so it's much easier to be supportive rather than competitive with each other.
The editing teacher wandered in while his class was on break because 2 of us had taken his class before. He made a comment that he thinks I'm a good filmmaker, which was quite nice to hear because he works as an editor in a post house in town so he sees both a lot of student and a lot of professional work. Good to know he thinks I compare favorably.
After he wandered back out Aaron said, he seemed nice, I thought you didn't really like that class. So I said, I like him, I just thought the class needed more structure for my tastes. But he's nice enough, and I'm quite pleased that he likes me because the kind of job openings he's likely to hear about are jobs that I will be qualified for. Round about March I'm going to track him down and talk to him about where he works and what jobs he hears about around town. I'll make sure he's got my card. I'll do the same with my sound design professor from last term. I couldn't do what he does really, but he might hear about stuff that I could do.
PS
Auditions Day 2 (of 4) went ok. Better for me than for Aaron. We talked to several people up for Bates but none was really a good fit. Although I could get a Professor out of it. I did find a good Tim and a good Esther. There's still more Esthers to meet, and hopefully a Tim or two, but if all the rest are duds I'd be happy to call back these two for a test together. I am going to do call backs for Sarah, Esther, and Tim because the three of them are the heart of the film so I need for them to click well together.
