One of the best things about the Woods Hole Film Festival is how well they foster discussions among filmmakers. They encourage filmmakers to come, or maybe just the wonderful summer local does that. And then once they get everyone here they do well giving us opportunities to hang out and chat. There are official things like yesterday's breakfast and today's Quick Stop. And there is also just being in a small town and bumping into people all week long.
At today's Quick Stop - a mid-afternoon gathering at a bar sort of place where we had free hors d'oeuvres and sangria - we chatted with several people. Linda arrived yesterday so now I have a partner-in-crime for all this stuff which makes it so much easier and more fun. I don't think anyone we talked to this afternoon was actually from the films we saw today. But in some ways I think that's even better because that just means we're meeting more people.
The other kind of discussions happening is the Q&A after the screenings. We saw a flight of shorts with 6 films in the group and 4 of them had filmmakers in attendance. So that's good to begin with. Then the woman who was facilitating the discussion did a really good job of getting things going and keeping things going. So there was a real discussion, not just go down the line and say why you did this film, and then go down the line and say what your next film will be, and then ok that's all we have time for. There was back and forth with the audience, and back and forth with the filmmakers. It was good.
Then after in the lobby Linda and I chatted up one of the filmmakers because when she answered what her next project is she said it's a narrative science fiction short. So we wanted to share a bit of geek girl power with her.
