I'm ready and so I'm restless.
Yesterday I met with the woman playing Ellen to talk about the part and what it's about and where it's going. Today I had lunch with the man playing Alec for similar discussions. I am quite pleased that they were both mostly thinking the same sorts of things that I was. I find that reassuring on both the writing and casting fronts.
Tonight I had supper with Aaron (1st AD) and Lai (DP) to go over the shot list and overheads. (Overheads are top down sketches of the space and where the actors, lights, and camera placements will be.) And we just hung out and talked for a while. It was nice and kind of relaxing. There are certainly still things that could go wrong, but as far as the three of us could tell tonight it wasn't any of the things we really have any control over.
In some ways this project isn't much of a stretch for me. It's a basic sort of story with basic sorts of locations and mostly basic sorts of camera work. And I'm either smart for not making it hard on myself to do it well, or else missing an opportunity to try new things. But the more I work on it the more I like the story, and the actors are getting what it's about and why I want to tell it, and I don't think making it harder than it needs to be would make it a better story. If they want to know what kind of filmmaker I am I think this will be pretty representative.
